9 Beautiful Black Furniture Makeovers to Inspire! (2021)

THERE IS SOMETHING SO FUN ABOUT LOOKING AT THE WONDERFUL PIECES OF FURNITURE PEOPLE ARE REFINISHING. I AM INSPIRED EVERYTIME I LOOK.

THERE SEEMS TO BE AN COUNTLESS STREAM OF BEAUTIFUL PIECES PEOPLE HAVE REFINISHED AND IT BRINGS SUCH INSPIRATION. THAT IS THE BEAUTY WITH FURNITURE REDESIGN THE RESULTS ARE TRUELY ENDLESS.

WE LIVE IN A SOCIETY WHERE SO MUCH IS NOT MEANT TO LAST. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THAT SOME OF THE STYLES OF THE PAST ARE NOT MORE POPULAR TODAY. I JUST GOT MY HANDS ON 3 ROCOCCO CHESTS OF DRAWERS AND…………

MY OHH MY ARE THEY GORGEOUS, THEY ARE DAMAGED SO I FEEL THAT THEY ARE IN NEED OF SOME LOVE. THAT IS A STYLE I JUST GO WOW OVER EVERYTIME I SEE THEM.

ALL THOSE BEAUTIFUL CURVES AND NEAT LINES.

I WAS FIRST INSPIRED WHEN I STARTING LOOKING INTO FINISHING FURNITURE BY THE FACT THAT SOMETHING MANY WOULD THROW AWAY COULD BECOME SOMETHING SO WANTED. IT BECOMES A VALUED ITEM AGAIN, AND THAT IN ITSELF IS QUITE WONDERFUL. I AM SHOCKED CONSTANTLY WITH HOW MUCH WASTE WE HAVE AND I TRY MY VERY BEST TO THINK ABOUT THE FUTURE OF OUR CHILDREN BY DOING WHAT I CAN, WHICH IS FAR FROM PERFECT BUT WE CAN ONLY TRY OUR BEST. CANT WE!

THERE IS SOMETHING WONDERFUL ABOUT THIS. THERE ARE SO MANY PIECES THAT WOULD END UP IN THE LANDFILL IF WE DID NOT SAVE THEM, AND THE THING IS SO MUCH FURNITURE NOW DAYS IS NOT BUILT THE SAME.

I LOVE THAT WE ARE SAVING THEM AND THAT MANY PEOPLE ARE CREATING A PIECE OF ART AT THE SAME TIME. I MEAN HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE SOME PIECES! WOW! PEOPLE ARE SO TALENTED AND I AM CONSTANTLY LOOKING FOR INSPIRATION AND JUST LOVE EXPLORING THE GORGEOUS IDEAS THAT PEOPLE ARE CREATING.

I NEVER IMAGINED THIS WOULD BE MY PATH BUT I JUST LOVE IT, I AM CONSTANTLY LEARNING NEW TECHNIQUES AND RESEARCHING AND TESTING OUT NEW IDEAS AND IT IS SUCH FUN.

I HOPE ONE DAY TO BECOME AS GREAT AS OTHERS OUT THERE. BECAUSE THEY REALLY ARE INSPIRING! BUT I HOPE MY POST WILL INSPIRE IN ITS OWN WAY. IF ANYONE CAN GET ANY MOTIVATION FROM THIS POST THEN I WILL BE HAPPY.

1. A GORGEOUS NORWEGIAN CARVED STYLE BUFFET

First i will start off with a piece i recently refinished. This piece was given to me free, it was in great shape apart from the middle door which was stuck. Once it was given a good clean and sanding it was looking much better. I have not yet created a post about this but the process was the same as the 2 chests of drawers down below, click on picture to get redirected to the (How to) post. I love the RUSTIC LOOK. Can imagine this in a dark rustic themed room.

2. A SIMPLE UNDERSTATED CONSOLE TABLE

The next piece is a console table that was stripped bare with a magical heat gun! Oh what a joy this project ended up being. I loved the process because it was made so easy by the gun. Usually stripping furniture is far from fun but after using this contraption i was in Love….

3. VINTAGE ROSE INSPIRED NIGHTSTANDS

For my next inspirational piece was these 1920s night stands, they were boring and drab when i got my hands on them but after a bit of paint and some transfers they were brought back to life. This is a new project i have just finished, so no post yet but if anyones interested let me know and i will make a post. This was an enjoyable project, i had not done this technique with these colors before, and i loved the outcome. Understated GLAM.

4. BLACKWASH BUFFET

For this lovely carved buffet i did a BLACKWASH and finished it with a Polycrylic. It gave a completely different effect then using dark wax. It is lighter and more grey in color. I LOVED this one so much i had to keep it. The furniture in my house is changed out all the time, i can not seem to help myself! I end up refinishing something, and pouring in so much love When finishing it that I want to keep it around a little while. I sometimes just sit and stare at pieces admiring them. I think this is the addictive part about furniture refinishing. Click on the picture.

5. A SIMPLE RUSTIC GRAPHITE CHEST

This little chest of drawers was a joy to redesign. I love how simple the chest is and loved enhancing the flaws rather then covering them up. I love the idea of a piece being able to age with us. I like the idea that if it gets a knock it wont look broken or obvious. I like that things can live a normal life and hold onto there charm.

6. AN INDUSTRIAL HIGH CUPBOARD WITH COPPER ACCENTS

This was a project i put lots of love into. I picked up the cupboard and it was covered in white paint. I then presided to strip it and pick every last bit of paint off it. The effect on the body of this piece at night was stunning. The lady who bought it, said she was so happy with it and loved it! That made me so happy, there is something so wonderful about bringing joy to our customers. Great transformation! Before and after pictures in post, come have a look.

7. A FARMHOUSE CUPBOARD WITH DISTRESSED DETAILS

This piece flew of the shelves. The man that collected it, had bought it for his partner as a birthday present, she had apparently seen it and LOVED IT! I love all the people i am getting to meet through this profession. There is something lovely about meeting people who love the same things as you and getting to hear their stories. I do not know the story of this ones beginnings since my partner very nicely picked this one up for me. I used graphite and steel wool to apply the dark wax. I overly distressed this piece and loved the effect created.

8. A TRADITIONAL NORWEGIAN SPOON CORNER SHELF

This is a traditional Norwegian spoon cupboard. I found this piece in my house when we first moved in here and had it lying around for a long time before i did anything with it. Was looking forward to giving this piece a rustic look. Keeping it in line with the cabin feel.

Graphite and dark wax create such a gorgeous matt black that is timeless.

9. CHALK PAINTED BLACK DISTRESSED CHEST OF DRAWERS

This next piece was a big project that turned out STUNNING! It had lots of old veneer that needed to be taken off and a few dings that needed to be filled but otherwise it was in great shape. I started this when i was still getting the hang of removing veneer, so this ended up taking me a little time…. Oh the joys of removing veneer…. Though the satisfaction when it is being removed is something else. This was another project finished with Graphite and dark wax. This style is very popular here in Norway. My customers seem to be loving this look.
Process to achieve this look

THIS POST WAS A JOY TO WRITE AND A LITTLE DIFFERENT FROM MY NORMAL POSTS, I LOVED GOING OVER SOME OF MY PREVIOUS PROJECTS AND LOOKING AT ALL I HAVE DONE. I THINK WE DESERVE TO BE PROUD OF OURSELVES AND ALL WE ACHIEVE. I LOVE SHARING WITH YOU ALL AND BEING ABLE TO HOPEFULLY HELP INSPIRE SOMEONE OUT THERE. HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A GREAT DAY.
