Chalk Paint Furniture Makeover

Create this OLD WORLD Look with Chalk Paint

I found this little chest of drawers on fb marketplace for free! It was in great condition.

Just a few scratches and dings that i easily filled in with wood filler. I also gave it a good wash. Old furniture can have years of dirt and grime build up on it. I use a cleaning solution (similar to TSP) i buy in the hardware shop, which is meant for cleaning furniture.

Step 1.

I first added 2 appliques (moulds, molds) 😉 which i found on Amazon. I stuck these on with strong glue. I sanded them on the inside and on the surface of the furniture so they would stick well.

Step 2.

I then painted every which way with Annie Sloans Provence, I used Annie Sloan brush for this. I did 2 coats.

Step 3.

I then used a technique called ragging which is super simple and fun. You get the paint onto the surface and dab it with a piece of material. You just lift the cloth up and down on the surface. If you feel like you need more moisture you can add water from a spray bottle.

I used Annie Sloan Duck egg blue for this part.

Step 4.

I then added details to age the piece. I added Annie Sloans Antibes green and Barcelona orange. These colours are beautiful but very bright. At first i got a little worried and i ended up spending a little time re-evaluating the project. Hmm… And then i decided on a paint wash. I mixed 50% Louis blue by (Annie Sloan) and 50% water.

I brushed this over the whole project a section at a time. Wiping away any excess paint. This made everything blend together.

I added the orange around the handles to look as if they were rusty. And the green around the edges of the draws to look aged.

Step 5.

I then waxed the whole thing with Annie Sloans clear wax to seal the paint and give it some protection. The wax darkens the colour of the paint somewhat. I then started adding black wax around the details to enhance them.

(I ended up playing around a little here and seeing what looked nice. Since i had added clear wax first it was easier to control the black wax. It is easy to use clear wax to remove black wax after clear waxing also)

Step 6.

When i had finished waxing the piece. I used gilding wax in gold to emphasize the handles and the moulds. This can be a fun step as it really brings the whole piece together.

(The key to gilding wax used in this way is to add a little at a time, it is much easier to add more than to remove it)

Hope you liked my makeover! Let me know what you think?
