Beautiful concrete looking plant pot holders. How to recreate this look.
How i created this look! First think about the paint you use. I believe using matt paint helps to make the effect of concrete, i have used chalk paint. THIS is GREAT paint to use on any surface.
These were made out of ceramic, with a smooth shiny surface. The chalk paint sticks amazingly. I did not water down the paint at all. I left it out to thicken.
I had extra time recently, so started refinishing items at home which has been so fun.
Love the feeling that changing items and furniture gives you.
I loved the result that was achieved! Chalk paint is so fun to play around with. I also didnt mind how the applique had cracked, i felt it added a nice touch to the end result. This can often happen with clay. It is easy to fill it in after everything has dried. You can push a little into the gap. (And add a little super glue to keep it in place).
List of things i used:
1. Plant pots (any material or size will work)
2. Small pot of (Annie sloans) Graphite– Any matt dark grey would work (Though
primar would have to be used with some paints)

3. Small pot of (Annie sloans) Paris grey- Matt light grey

4. Applique mold (reusable and so fun)
5. Air dry clay (little goes a long way)
6. 2 x Cheap chip brush
7. Small pot of white wax (Annie Sloan)

Step 1.
I first started with 2 layers of graphite. I use a cheap chip brush. As this techniques ruins brushes, better to use a cheap brush and reuse it for these type of paint jobs.
(I dab the paint brush up and down. Up and down. This gives texture to the paint)
Step 2.
I then add the Dry air clay to the mold. I remove the clay straight away carefully. I add strong glue to the backside of the mold and lay the applique on the plant pot. I might have to move it slightly to get a central position.
Appliques are super fun and can update any boring household item.
(THESE ARE GREAT TO ADD TO ANYTHING, from Mirrors to small tables, chairs, plant pots etc)
They are easy to use once you get the hang of them, it took me a few tries but you get alot of (Air dry clay) in a packet.
I first bought myself a little mold. and just played around a little.
Step 3.
I then dabbed the Paris grey over the top. I did this with just a little paint on the brush. I made sure there was a little color showing through.
(I have used more Paris Grey on this pot and not left a lot of graphite showing through)
Step 4.
I then waxed the whole pot with white wax. For this project i used a cheap chip brush to brush the wax onto the pot. Using white wax added a layer of white which fills into any crevices on the layer of paint.
